The Instituto Allende’s Lifelong Learning Program presents:

Logic with Sherlock

An accessible two-session introduction to philosophy taught by PhD candidate Rebecca Robb.

  • When: March 16 & 17 – 1pm to 3pm

  • Where: LLP Classroom at Ancha de San Antonio 22, San Miguel de Allende.

  • Cost: 325 pesos

This is an Introduction to Logic through the Sherlock Holmes stories of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Logic is the discipline of philosophy concerned with precise reasoning. Participants will explore logic by examining the methods of Conan Doyle’s beloved fictional detective. Have your magnifying glass ready! We will explore Epistemology, the branch of philosophy that asks how we know what we know. We discuss what it means to know versus what it means to believe. And we examine how women, historically, have been dismissed as less capable of logical thinking than men.  Both of Rebecca’s classes will be more discussion oriented rather than lecture-style.

Rather than a traditional lecture, the course is designed as an open, discussion-oriented dialogue that draws on participants’ own life experiences, guided by Robb’s background in Ethics and Public Affairs from Carleton University and her commitment to making philosophy genuinely engaging for everyday learners. For expats and curious visitors in San Miguel who enjoy a sharp mental workout in good company, this is a rare opportunity to explore one of philosophy’s most practical disciplines through one of literature’s most beloved characters.
